I am from Arizona and have watched John McCain change with the seasons. I used to vote for him, but he now panders to the far right of the Republican party (Sarah Palin and her far right views is his latest offering) and has flip-flopped on many, many issues that are of vital importance. He is not forward thinking. Here are some reasons to vote for someone else on November 4th.

John McCain has voted with Bush over 90% of the time. He is NOT an independent thinking maverick.

McCain said in 2005 that he opposed Bush' tax cuts because they were too tilted to the wealthy. Now he supports them.

McCain supported the Lieberman/Warner legislation to combat global warming. Now he doesn't.

McCain went from saying he would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade to supporting the repeal, even in cases of rape or incest.

McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as an agent of intolerance in 2002, but then gave the commencement address at Falwell's Liberty University in 2006.

McCain said before the war in Iraq that we will win this conflict easily. Four years later, he said he knew the war in Iraq was going to be long and hard and tough.

When Barack Obama talked about going after terrorists in the Pakistani mountains McCain criticized him for it. He's since come to the same conclusion.

On immigration policy, McCain announced in February, 2008 that he would vote against his own bill! Say what?!

Maverick...or confused and pandering? Give them four more years? I don't think so!

As for Obama, he plans to reach across the aisle and appoint Republicans to some high posts. “I think America deserves the best person for every job and so we are going to be canvassing far and wide if I am fortunate enough to be elected,” he said. He will be drawing on the expertise of independent Republicans such as Hagel and Lugar, who is regarded by Obama as a potential secretary of state.

Larry Korb, a defense official under President Ronald Reagan who is backing Obama, said: “By putting a Republican in the Pentagon and the State Department you send a signal to Congress and the American people that issues of national security are above politics.”

Korb recalled that President John F Kennedy appointed Robert McNamara, a Republican, as defence secretary in 1961. “Hagel is not only a Republican but a military veteran who would reassure the troops that there was somebody in the Pentagon who understood their hopes, concerns and fears,” he said.

Please note that in the NT as im most established media outlets, the conservative, pro-GOP, pro McCain-Palin side comes from the PAID political writer, ie, the press.

The voices against the Washington conservative establishment are vox populi.
  • Robert Chapman · 1 year ago
The GOP spend-o-rama which has gained tempo during McCain's tenure places the "gov't boot" right back on the taxpayers' necks.

Thanks to McCain, Palin and their GOP colleagues, we must not only foot the bills for useless weapons systems, bridges to nowhere, government extragavance, and endless, needless wars, WE MUST PAY THE INTEREST on the money they are borrowing to finance the party.

Anyone claiming that McCain-Palin are fiscally frugal can only be providing comic relief.

My heart goes out to Ed and Dot and Robert's and Cynthia's family regarding the accident. I cried when I heard the news and even more when I read the negative comments people have made on many sites regarding the news articles. Ed and Dot were my childhood neighbors for 25 years. They are wonderful human beings and will now need all the positive reinforcement they can get to go on with their lives. Let us all show only our love.

We are writing in regard to your article about husband & wife running for the same selectman seat in Lyndeborough. We think its wonderful this couple are so interested in taking part in their community. The horrendous with misleading things we have read in the papers in recent years their opponents have been involved in and supported need to be ousted. The Boisverts obviously through their long terms as residents and positive involvement in the Town of Lyndeborough appear to be the breath of fresh air well over due. This Dwight Sowerby and his cronies on the board have had the Boisverts falsely arrested, brought suits against them, had a good police chief fired, apparently supported the cover up of illegal activities by members of the select board, and the list goes on. Why would any good Town want their Town government run this way? Its time for a change, vote the bums out.

I have experienced the misery of homelessness at several points in my life and, although there is a certain sense of freedom to it, it is a dangerous and miserable lifestyle that is hard to rise out of. Contrary to popular belief, most homeless did not become so out of choice and not because they are lazy, stupid, or immoral. Many homeless people are victims of abuse in the form of neglect and abandonment by their parents or other caregivers. Like many victims of abuse, a lot of them have chemical dependency problems. Their pain is so deep that they use alcohol or other drugs as an escape. Some of them are simply victims of life’s tragedies, such as hurricanes, fires, or other catastrophes from which they simply don’t have the resources to recover. Also, there is a snowball effect that occurs with homelessness. After all, who is going to hire someone with no address? Most homeless people don’t have the resources to even do their laundry; who is going to hire someone in filthy clothes? Also once a person has fallen to the level of living on the streets it is very difficult for them to get a job even if they are capable of working, because the condition of homelessness creates a low sense of self-esteem which makes it difficult to relate to other people. It is difficult to find, much less keep a job once a person’s self-esteem is so badly damaged. I invite you to my website: www.FreetheGods.com. There you will find an article and pictures I have taken of homeless people. I always give them a dollar or two for the privilege of photographing them. I am often surprised by their cheerfulness and sense of pride. Often, they will show themselves to have some kind of talent. There is a fine line between genius and insanity.

There is enough room in the United States for everyone who is here right now. The idea that undocumented workers are stealing jobs from legal residents is laughable. This is just another example of the racism that permeates the immigration discussion.. As any group immigrates to a new area it creates its own demand for work and services, but the demand is not oneway: all these new arrivals will buy food, pay Social Security taxes, payroll taxes, property taxes, rent apartments and buy homes, spend money at WalMart, and McDonalds, send their kids to school etc. The argument that undocumented workers only TAKE is a lie and is debunked by the statistics. Undocumented workers pay into Social Security 15 billion dollars a year that they will never get back because they are forced to use fake SS numbers. Undocumented workers pay billions of dollars per year in payroll taxes and property taxes. They have just as much right to be here as you do, you are not special. I'm glad the undocumented workers are here and as more arrive they make our country stronger. Mark Montgomery boboberg@nyc.rr.com

Keeping in mind that windmills are hazardous to birds, be wary of the unintended consequences of believing and contributing to the all-knowing environmental lobby groups.
Water vapour is the most important green house gas followed by methane. The third important greenhouse gas is CO2, and it does not correlate well with global warming or cooling either; in fact, CO2 in the atmosphere trails warming which is clear natural evidence for its well-studied inverse solubility in water: CO2 dissolves in cold water and bubbles out of warm water. The equilibrium in seawater is very high, making seawater a great 'sink'; CO2 is 34 times more soluble in water than air is soluble in water.
Correlation is not causation to be sure. The causation has been studied, however, and while the radiation from the sun varies only in the fourth decimal place, the magnetism is awesome.
“Using a box of air in a Copenhagen lab, physicists traced the growth of clusters of molecules of the kind that build cloud condensation nuclei. These are specks of sulphuric acid on which cloud droplets form. High-energy particles driven through the laboratory ceiling by exploded stars far away in the Galaxy - the cosmic rays - liberate electrons in the air, which help the molecular clusters to form much faster than climate scientists have modeled in the atmosphere. That may explain the link between cosmic rays, cloudiness and climate change.”
As I understand it, the hypothesis of the Danish National Space Center goes as follows:
Quiet sun → reduced magnetic and thermal flux = reduced solar wind → geomagnetic shield drops → galactic cosmic ray flux → more low-level clouds and more snow → more albedo effect (more heat reflected) → colder climate
Active sun → enhanced magnetic and thermal flux = solar wind → geomagnetic shield response → less low-level clouds → less albedo (less heat reflected) → warmer climate
That is how the bulk of climate change might work, coupled with (modulated by) sunspot peak frequency there are cycles of global warming and cooling like waves in the ocean. When the waves are closely spaced, the planets warm; when the waves are spaced farther apart, the planets cool.
The ultimate cause of the solar magnetic cycle may be cyclicity in the Sun-Jupiter centre of gravity. We await more on that. In addition, although the post 60s warming period is over, it has allowed the principal green house gas, water vapour, to kick in with humidity, clouds, rain and snow depending on where you live to provide the negative feedback that scientists use to explain the existence of complex life on Earth for 550 million years. The planet heats and cools naturally and our gasses are the thermostat.
Check the web site of the Danish National Space Center.

To clarify Kevin's reporting of my comments "John Lynch is rehabbing the Republican Party. That is not his job....
He will have done more for the Republican Party than any republican in recent memory."
Let's look at Lynch's two most important appointment decisions - Attorney General and now US Senator. Both seats have gone to Republicans, both to Republican women. Like my GOP colleagues I value personal responsibility as well as "Party Responsibility"... NH Republicans need to figure out their brand and they need to find their own leaders (not get a political bailout from a Democratic Governor).

.The situation we are witnessing is sooo ironic - Gov. Lynch (D) will have done much of the GOP heavy lifting/repairing a party in message and money shambles - he has appointed credible Republicans who could never win a Republican primary in NH because the base is so reactionary and unfocused. And to add method to madness, Lynch has gifted the NH Republicans with leaders who are more "electorally friendly" with access to a state and national bully pulpit (ie. invaluable Free Media) - that would never have happened if the party was left to their own devices. (I am searching my brain to find a democrat he has appointed to any position that comes close to the visibility and stature of Ayotte and now Newman - none come to mind.)

aside. The last time in US history a Gov. appointed someone from another party who was not required by law to do so was in 1960 - it was the Governor of Oregon and the US Senator had died in office...at least that time there was no deal with the Senator.

I live in Nashua and pay property taxes here. Yesterday, I registered as required with a legitimate E-mail account from Comcast, which is completely verifiable. I used my actual name and posted an intelligent comment regarding Legislation for NH Casino's.

My question is simple: Why would the Editors of the Nashua Telegraph then delete my comments and/or seek to modify them by adding to or deleting from them? The purpose of a Free Press and the First Amendment is to "report news" as opposed to squelching it via your personal and/or political bent and/or leanings toward Political Correctness.

I am amazed at the behavior of the Press both here and at other larger papers such as the Herald and the Globe. You hire and publish work from illiterate Journalists and wonder why Readership, Sales and Advertising Revenue continually decline. You then systematically and illegally squelch First Amendment Rights to Free Speech by deleting posts and comments from blogs on critical issues; instead preferring to cater to the Mindless Masses and the Braindead.

It's interesting to see what it takes to get your editorial page this riled up: a long overdue call to restrict the power of the federal government.

Did you recruit your editorial page staff in Massachusetts?

The pro-government extremists in Washington DC have passed so many unconstitutional laws it's impossible to count them all.

Yet any proposal to curb their power in any meaningful way is considered radical to you.

And the Supreme Court you worship as the final arbiter of justice became a JOKE to me (and I think to millions of Americans) the moment they ruled in the Kelo case that your local government can seize your *home* if a shopping mall will generate more tax revenue!!

Frankly I was hoping the principled New Hampshirites who felt the same way would seize Souter's home just to make a point.

Three cheers for this brave legislator!

The federal government is nothing more than an arrogant bully who needs a punch in the nose -- if not far more.

It's sad how some of the youth in Nashua are ruining the services and public buildings we all need (and pay for). I'm a regular rider on the city's bus sytem. I've been using it to get to work for three years now. The high school kids ride for free, everyone else pays. I watch them vandalize the buses, spit at each other and on the windows, throw garbage anywhere, use VERY nasty language and make the rest of us worry if we are safe. They have no respect for anyone. It is too bad that some kids are ruining Nashua's best resources, like the bus system, schools, and common area's look disgusting with gang spray paintings.

Re: Debt retirement. First, I called every single bill sender...some good news, some not so good. Then I developed my plan which was contrary to professional advice read often in newspapers and magazines. Instead of focusing on the high interest bills, which had the highest debt line, I lined my bills up by order of amount owed and to reduce my fatigue over the seemly hopeless large amounts, I started with the one I owed the least to regardless of interest. So, hooray, I got a bill paid off while maintaining my minimum balance to all the others. Once that first one was paid off, I added what had been my monthly payment there to the next bill in addition to its minimum payment. And for the next bill I had their minimum payment plus the other amounts for the first two bills that were paid. Well, it took about a decade but Jan 2009 I paid off all old debt, and I worked for every penny. It was hard but I am happy. At the time, there was the reward of slicing paid cards and decreasing my mail (billings were almost daily when I started out). This kept me optimistic that I could get out of the mess that I did to myself and strengthened me to remain determined to stick to my plan.

It could be said this was not a wise plan, however, I needed to see progress albeit a bite-size at a time. I managed to feed the kids, keep the house, and earn a very good credit rating.

I think you are all missing the point. Dr H. is saying that volunteering is fine and fact a good thing..the difference I would ask is when does volunteering change to 'bartering' this is when the tax code applies... I volunteer probably more than the average person, animal shelters, Red Cross, Soup Kitchen, and many more..... but when my volunteerism was in exchanged for goods or services...I would gave to claim that on my taxes, and in fact I do....per my tax guy, I have to! be careful out there....don't be so defensive you all! volunteer away but don't do it for goods or services for yourself...do it for the good of giving and volunteering as it appears that Dr. H does in fact support if you really really read what he said....

Do not change seatbelt law. Live free or die. The legislature has changed so dramatically in its composition over the last 30-40 years that they should already be credited with many inroads into our everyday lives. Translate: restrictions put on our rights and traditions. We are fast becoming an extension of Massachusetts where taxes are high to promote the social agenda of the left, and the state is most comfortable restricting rights in the name of "protecting" the citizenry.

"Zoe, you are as the lone voice crying out in the wilderness.

I doubt that those who believe HB415 to be 'the bathroom bill' (and federal S.909 and H.R.1913 the 'pedophile protection act') will pay attention to your facts and figures -- no matter how accurate and scientific they may be, and how rigorous you are in presenting only tested, supportable information.

These are people who would outlaw the teaching of Evolution in favour of creationism, who would ban educating teenagers on all but abstinence as a method of birth/STD control, who would implement christian 'sharia' law, who would 're-educate' LGBT under penalty of law if they but could.

Something from my youth -- I remember being denied the opportunity to compete fairly with other 'classmates' in intellectual activities. I was capable of making significant contributions to a group that was, say, working on a project for science class, or researching a topic for history. I could make a significant contribution, but I was marginalized. The Alpha members of the group would either ignore my contributions or take them and claim them as their own work (don't worry, I learned how to fight back and sabotage their efforts after a few such experiences.)

The point of this is that it is as if a portion of society wants to 'win' against transgenders disqualification, leaving them the scraps of a menial minimum-wage job.

Zoe, do you have information on the median IQ of the transgender community? We've produced some pretty outstanding people, in spite of the artificial hobbling we as a community have received from society.

Lynn Conway contributed the way to millions of transistors per 'chip' which is embodied in the laptop I use to write this. And the successes she posts on her site are from highly professional career fields.

It must be that there are those who need a bogey-man. They are the ones who are labeling us things that we are not, and treat us as untouchable castes in other societies past and present, doing the unpleasant things and leaving the 'betters' feeling good about themselves.

Well, if we provide them such a service, what would a fair, respectable and equitable compensation be?"

Thank you for the insight into Dr. Craven's response to the tragedies in Milford, NH. As a resident of the town and parent at the High School, I can tell you that the MHS team's response to the accident was amazing. Resources were available immediately, the website was updated at both the HS and district level. Counseling service available until 8pm, parents meeting with an outside grief counselor was available to walk us through the process of helping our children.

Even though Dr. Craven was absent that week, his presence was obvious. For parents of children at this HS, we all know that Dr. Craven is very much a part of the HS. He plays an active role with students and his level of visibility is unmatched. Thank you to Dr. Craven and his team of professionals for preparing proactively for this type of tragedy. It is obvious to all in the community that there was a well though out crisis plan in place, it was executed perfectly and the student body and parents were offered every ounce of support available.

As the parent of a son at the MMS, I was disappointed by the lack of response from the middle school. I hope in the future that the superintendent works with the middle school administration to better address any future tragedies.

Thank you again to the MHS staff for your response. Our children are in a great school.

I hope the Justice system does not fail us. The Blanchets should be ashamed of themselves. A "mistake" is something that happens, you correct it, you learn what you did wrong, and it doesn't happen again. Any 3 year old can attest to this. These two were willfully and knowingly cheating the system to reap the rewards. Cheating not only clients, but friends. How could you hold your head up in this town or show your face for that matter? No honest and informed American can support the ACES Act (cap and trade), based on the global warming scam.

Cap and Trade “would be the equivalent of an atomic bomb directed at the U.S. economy—all without any scientific justification,” said famed climatologist Dr. S. Fred Singer. It would significantly increase taxes and the cost of energy, forcing many companies to close, thus increasing unemployment, poverty and dependence.

Cap and trade represents huge taxes and cost increases, which will hurt mostly the poor and the middle class. Cap and trade will give dictatorial powers to Obama and will further enrich his billionaire friends (Gore, Soros, Goldman Sachs, Obama’s Chicago Climate Exchange friends, General Electric, the United Nations, etc.) -- all at our expense and at the expense of our children and grandchildren.

Those brainwashed to the point of wanting to destroy the economy to "prevent global warming" are behaving like the most primitive human beings who were duped into believing that human sacrifices would ensure them good weather. Human beings don't have the power to control climate! And killing the economy will not help the environment. Poor countries can’t protect the environment. Just look at Haiti!

More and more scientists and thinking people all over the world are realizing that man-made global warming is a hoax that threatens our future and the future of our children. More than 700 international scientists dissent over man-made global warming claims. They are now more than 13 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media-hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers. http://www.climatechangefraud.com/content/view/...

Additionally, more than 30,000 American scientists have signed onto a petition that states, "There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate." http://www.petitionproject.org

We pray that honest leaders – both Democrat and Republican - are able to save us from Obama's criminal ACES Act (cap-and-trade) scam.
  • SongbirdinNH · 5 months ago
Some truly irresponsible remarks there, AntonioSosa. You are desperate to have your personal desire taken for fact.

For you to call Obama's validly taken position "criminal" is itself at least as criminal.

I'm a tenant at 89 Lake St and being a tenant means trying to make the building I live in a place I can call home. The bushes are becoming out of control something does need to be done about it. I don't think it's a matter of where the money comes from or what's on the priority list once there is money. I believe it's a matter of the state/town taking action for what they call "theres." It's brought to my attention that the manager (Ted) of 89 Lake once tried asking to move the fence back so us tenants had a back yard to use in a useful way. With that, assuming Ted would maintain that land and make it another perk to living at 89 for all of us..therefore, making it one less thing the state/town had to be bothered with. Unfortunately, being denied that request I do hold the responsibility to the state/town to upkeep the wasted and unused space. The only solution for the respectful organization to maintain the bushes or approve for the fence to be moved back. In conclusion I as a tenant at this building will back up the managers to whatever lengths dem necessary.

Regarding the diagonal yellow line in H/P parking spaces Penny Arsenault is correct they are there for vehicles with W/C people to be able to drop ramps or lifts so people in wheelchairs are able to exit safely. When I can find a H/P spot and need this I often find the spots taken. I know not everyone has a visible disability but I do know that handicap cards and parking spaces are very much abused. Doctors too often easily write off disability letters to obtain these I'm sure in fear of law suits. Larry David on his show "Curb your enthusiasm" had a great show dealing with this problem. H/P parking spaces were taken by people with "hangnails" and a H/P bathroom stall was taken by someone who "stuttered" Often at events and restaurants I've seen all H/P spaces taken and no visible signs of need by people who easily walk to and from these cars. I have MS and in a W/C 24/7 and often need to park a fair distance away to be able to exit my van. I don't know why people want to be able to go to the extreme of obtaining or as what happened to me stealing these blue H/P cards so they don't have to walk far. If I could walk I'd now do it gladly over broken glass from the furthest point in a parking lot. People are funny as Larry David pointed out and laughter is the best medicine...look at hospital robes!!

A few years ago NH Government started taxing us on our campsites. We were already paying the property tax. This tax we pay on our leased campsites, doesn't give us any town priviliages, no mailboxes, can't write it off on our federal taxes, no voting rights nothing. But the taxes go to the town, the school, the county, and the state. Our lease agreement for the season already had enough money to cover those taxes. Think about it, if you owned a property and you were going to rent it to someone else to use, are you going to charge then $100.00/month when you need to charge them $200.00 month to cover your taxes which might be $150.00. Now they want to charge us a rooms and meals tax for something we already own. We own the camper, paid for the food at a local grocery store and now we have to pay 9% more. Get out and vote, Govenor Lynch needs to go as well as the current state law makers.

Is it any wonder that majority of the people are not looking at buying stocks? The same individuals that lost all that money are still running everything and giving useless advice. Those of you on "Main Street", would you give your hard earned money to the same individuals that lost half of you retirement money? NO!

The United States have been gifted with educated individuals waiting to fix America's problems. Many gifted scholars are just waiting for a chance to replace the incompetent stockmarket staff.

My guest is that most of the individuals working in the stockmarket weren't hired based on qualifications, but on who he or she knows or what family he or she was born into.

"Main Street" pay attention! You as taxpayers are share holders in all those banks that have received bailout money. You have the rights to demand the banks to return their borrowed money with Interest or start putting that money back into the economy by lending the money.

Why aren't the banks lending any of our tax money by giving out loans required by the Federal government, It is called be incompetent, that is why they want to spend billions of our tax dollars to hire talent by giving bonuses.

Looks like the Defenders are in a bit of trouble. I think that they may have been since the start. The name of the team, the uniforms and the league has not helped them. I think the only way to have a chance in Nashua is to follow Manchester and Lowell and seek out an affiliated arrangement plus have an owner with deep pockets. Holman is a really nice baseball stadium and it is a shame to see it go if the Defenders do not return which is a given. I doubt the town will keep it up without a tenant. I think the Telegraph has done an admiral job not "downing" the operation and giving them the benefit of the doubt right along. I do not live anywhere near Nashua but it is my hometown and I was rooting for a pro team to catch on but it looks doubtful. Bobinis

FairPoint is living up to the press folks in the Carolinas gave it when the company was seeking the buy-out. Remember the promises of increased connectivity for internet users? Apparently, that promise did not exend to those of us who cannot afford the pricey FairPoint internet service. I'm in subsidized housing and use Netzero Hi-Speed 3G at $14.95 per month. Since the fully transfer of the control to FairPoint, my connection speed has dropped to a speed slower than my original dial-up! I contacted the PUC and, whiel I got a rather rapid response (within 2 days), my question wa not answered. I truly believe that FairPoint has intentionally slowed my srvice speed in an attempt to force me into investing in THEIR service. Doesn't that warrant a Class Action Suit similar to those filed against Microsoft?

To My Friends And Neighbors In Nashua,

Growing up, my home town did not have a minor league team to watch. I certainly wish I had the opportunity to attend minor league games as a child. Fast forward to today. Exciting, fan friendly, fun, minor league baseball is played in front of adoring fans in nearly every substantial town or city in America.

I had a chance to watch the Defenders last weekend. I must say I enjoyed the experience at Historic Holman Stadium. Granted the team only won one of the three games that I saw, but I encourage the citizens of Nashua and the environs to come out to support the team.

Trust me, we have a communtiy treasure in Holman Stadium. I have not seen such a historic, natural, quaint and well maintained ball park as Holman. It is a gorgeous place to watch a game. I have been in over a dozen minor league parks and I have yet to see one that can match Holman!

Hey, our team isn't going to win every game, but they play hard and compete well in the competitive Can Am League. And it is FUN. Just this past weekend, we had firewords, promotional give aways, fan/kid/family friendly on field activites, a pre-game concert by a band, AND the on-field wedding of one of the Defenders. Not to mention some exciting baseball!

Manager Brian Daubach and his staff have done a great job with this team. The Telegraph has published a number of human interest stories on the players. It is a interesting and talented group of young men, representing us well every night through the summer. Some of our citizens of Nashua are acting as "host families" to the players.

Granted, the organization has made some mis-steps, and they, too, have been well chronicled in this publication. And some of them are unfortunate. But with Dan Duquette taking a more active role in the club, look for the Defenders to continue to make progress under his watch.

Folks, a "dark" Holman, a gorgeous park without a team, is just unconscionable. Let's all get out to watch some games, have some fun and support the team. Tickets are cheap, come on out to the games. What is more American in the summer than packing up the family and kids and attending minor league baseball? Bring your friends, talk up the team in your family and work places and come out to Holman for an evening of fun with the Defenders.

Businesses, get behind the team, too. They will appreciate your support!

Let's all show our civic pride right here in Nashua! Get behind the Defenders and I promise you will have a pleasant and fun night watching our players pursue their baseball dreams in historic Holdman Stadium! Let show our friends in Lowell and Manchester that Nashua is a great town for minor league baseball. Let's show our support by coming out to the games to back our Defenders.

    Thank you,
    philfever76

The Sox are doing very well without him and I for one hope they get rid of him and send him back to Japan there must be many American boys who would like the opportunity to play in our American passtime.

This is a comment on Tony Paradiso's column dated August 2.
    Tony:
I appreciate your common sense approach. I do not appreciate the trendy, uninhibited use of taxpayer money to spread around in various zombified companies of the banking and auto industries.
But this cash for clunkers flash in the pan seems to have caught the public imagination, so maybe it works better than all that hidden money that lurks electronically somewhere between the Fed, the Treasury, and Detroit or New York.
And so maybe the cash for clunkers pump-priming is beneficial in its overall contribution to the ailing notion that our economy can recover.
Let the dealers burn through that cash in the time it takes to burn a tank of gas, and we'll see what stimulatory effect it has. It's just a drop in the tank anyway...a billion here, a billion there....

it is way past time for another party or parties to come to washington
and take charge. both of our present national parties pay more attention to lobbyist and getting re-elected than they do to the voters/tax payers.
many in congress have been in washington way too long and have gotten rich at the tax payers expense.

we need term limits, but that won't happen while they are in office so we need to vote for new people, fresh ideas. I would support a third or fourth national party with a new ideas. the size of government has to be reduced
along with the taxes fees tolls etc to support this huge mess.
stop voting for the same old bozos they will only give us more of what we have, a mess.
Government never closes or sunsets a program, once inacted into law the program and money /overhead needed to fund that program goes on forever, that has to stop.

since 1966 we tax payers have thrown trillions of dollars into the "war of poverty" yet today we have more poverty than ever, why is that ?

Because you can't solve social issues/probems by throwing money at the problem. if you could we should have no poverty after spending trillions of dollars to fix the problem.

there is an axiom in economics which states " What you tax you get less of, what you substize you get more of"
there needs to be new faces ideas parties in washington with a top to bottom review of the budget close out old outdated ideas programs reduce taxes and gov spending.

this needs to happen at the state, county and city level of government also. Govenment has gotten too large and expensive, it takes too much money out of the national economy

the paper should publish a list ( and its long) of all of the taxes, fees, fines,
tolls, licenses, surcharges, excise taxes etc inacted since 1960.
I have a copy in my computer once you see the list you will see just how much money government takes and waste.

So, as for treating them different because they are athletes is completely wrong. I'm sure charges will come for those involved.

High school and junior high school curriculums need to address this "group dynamic" that Dr Levin describes, parents too. While raising my own youngsters I told them from an early age that "you can die from an overdose of alcohol" "never let anyone tell you to just guzzle the stuff, it can kill you"
& swimming in a NE body of water before June 21 is deadly too even if it is a 98 degree day in april." We can use this as a teaching moment, telling kids over & over "don t let "so called friends" talk you into a crime you will end up throwing your life away" Constant repetition may hopefully yield some results, "Be your own Man not a sheep"

It would be good to know how the capacity of a school is determined. Does this capacity reflect the needs of schools today and going forward? The needs of schools and school children have changed enormously in the past 30 years.

There have been many studies on the benefits of reduced class sizes. Smaller classes and better learning opportunities would be a sound investment in the future of Nashua.

Closing a school would be extremely short-sighted.
